‘결’은 잎맥만을 뜻하지 않는다. 화면 위에 켜켜이 쌓인 층, 조각도로 파낸 자국, 흙에 새겨진 잎맥. 서로 다른 재료와 방식에는 모두 지나온 시간이 흔적으로 남아 있다. 그렇게 재료 위에 쌓이고 새겨진 시간이 내가 말하는 ‘결’이다. 잎을 오래 바라보고 작업하면서, 사람 역시 살아온 시간과 겪어온 일, 기억이 쌓여 저마다의 결을 만들어 간다는 생각을 하게 되었다. 내 작업이 그 삶에 건네는 작은 존중과 인사가 되고, 같은 시간을 살아가는 누군가에게는 조용한 위로가 되기를 바란다.

나는 잎을 통해 삶을 이야기하고 싶다.
어느 순간 잎이 살아온 모습을 온전히 기록하고 싶어졌다. 땅에 떨어지거나 가지치기로 생을 마친 잎을 마치 한때 존재했던 생의 표본처럼 남기고 싶었다. 그래서 잎을 흙 위에 직접 올리고 압착해 잎맥과 표면의 흔적을 그대로 남겼다. 생각해 보면 이 행위 역시 내게는 판화와 크게 다르지 않았다. 잎 자체가 하나의 판이 되고, 압력을 통해 그 모습이 흙으로 전사된다. 판화에서 해오던 찍고 전사하는 행위가 흙이라는 재료로 이어진 셈이다.
흙이라는 재료를 선택한 데에는 또 다른 이유도 있었다. 잎은 흙에서 나고 결국 다시 흙으로 돌아간다. 생을 다한 잎을 다시 흙 위에 놓고 기록하는 과정에서 내가 계속 생각해 온 순환의 의미가 자연스럽게 겹쳐졌다. 흙 역시 충분히 마르고, 초벌과 소성을 거쳐 불을 통과해야 비로소 단단한 형태가 된다. 서두를 수 없는 재료이다. 잎이 지나온 시간과 흙이 도자가 되어가는 시간이 한 작품 안에서 만난다고 생각했다. 흙에 남겨진 잎의 형태와 잎맥은 마치 오래된 화석처럼 보였다.
아버지를 떠나보낸 뒤, 어머니와 함께 한강을 걸으며 수없이 많은 네잎클로버를 찾았다. 그때 우리에게 네잎클로버는 행운이 아니었다. 서로를 위로하는 마음이었고, 함께 견뎌 낸 시간을 기억하는 방식이었다. 그 기억은 자연스럽게 작업으로 이어졌다. 그래서 나는 생을 다한 잎 위에 네잎클로버를 새긴다. 그것은 행운을 기원하기 위해서가 아니라, 제 시간을 다 살아낸 잎에게 “수고했다, 잘 살아냈다”고 건네는 작은 인사다. 어쩌면 그 인사는 잎에게 보내는 것이면서, 같은 시간을 살아가는 우리 자신에게 건네는 위로인지도 모른다.
